The Arts

The Arts have the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich all students, exciting the imagination and encouraging them to reach their creative and expressive potential. Students in all year levels participate in a variety of performing arts related activities throughout the year in accordance with their age and abilities. They attend an hourly lesson every week and develop performance skills within the Arts subjects of Media, Drama and Dance.

Drama

Students learn to think, move, speak and act with confidence. In making and staging drama they learn how to be focused, innovative and resourceful, and collaborate and take on responsibilities for drama presentations. They are excited by exploring their imagination and taking risks in storytelling through role and dramatic action.

Dance

Through Dance, students represent, question and celebrate human experience, using the body as the instrument and movement as the medium for personal, social, emotional, spiritual and physical communication.

Media

Students create representations of the world by telling stories through communications technologies.

St Mary’s Peer Support Program

Relationship development and leadership development are important aspects of schooling at St Mary’s. The Peer Support Program is the vehicle that combines these two elements as a way of bringing out the talents and gifts of our senior students.

Peer Support runs for 8 weeks with one 45 minute lesson completed per week. The following modules are worked through and each module has a focus designed to develop the skills and abilities of all students.

  • Keeping Friends – focuses on relationships
  • Living Positively – focuses on optimism
  • Moving Forward – focuses on resilience
  • Promoting Harmony – focuses on values

The senior students lead, guide, and direct the group through a variety of activities that develop the key focus for the term. In doing so, the leadership skills of the students in the upper year levels are increased and enhanced. It is extremely pleasing to witness the students take on these leadership roles, and displaying their gifts and talents in the process.
