Week 9, Term 3 2022 - 6th September 2022
From our Principal - Mr Wes Rose
This week, we celebrate National Child Protection Week.
National Child Protection Week (4-10 September) is an annual event starting on the first Sunday of September each year. The 2022 theme ‘Every child, in every community, needs a fair go’ aims to spread the message that ‘to treat all of Australia’s children fairly, we need to make sure every family and community has what children need to thrive and be healthy.’
National Child Protection Week is all about the ways that we can work together to build communities that support children and families. Children are safest when they are listened to, respected and believed.
“Child abuse and neglect is preventable. If we all work together as a community we can create an Australia where all children can grow up safe and well. What role can you play in supporting children and their families?” – Richard Cooke, CEO, NAPCAN

St Mary’s Got Talent
Excitement is building for this year’s talent show, which will be held this Thursday from 11:15am-1:15pm in the school Hall. We have over 20 student performances to amaze and entertain the crowd! Parents and relatives most welcome to attend. This year, our special judge is Miss Ebony Walker (Mercy college teacher and our RPM choreographer) as well as some Yr 10 Mercy students. A big shout out to Mrs Donna Wood for once again coordinating this year’s talent show!
Art Show – 13th September
I invite all students and families to our Art Show, to be held next Tuesday from 5:30pm-7:00pm. Our students have been busily preparing their artwork to display at this exhibition and other works from our parents, staff and camera club will also be on show. All artwork will be on display in the school hall; be sure to bring along a donation so you can 'purchase' your child's artwork.
After perusing the gallery, I invite all families to stay on and enjoy the festivities in the F Block area. We will once again have live music, some picnic mats/seating for families and a cash/EFTPOS bar with beer, red/white wine. We also have bento boxes that can be pre-purchased (via quickcliq). I encourage all families to make it along to this great event, which is one of the highlights of the St Mary’s calendar each year.
A message to children/families arriving before 8:15am
We have noticed that many of our students arrive to school before 8:15am and are spread out across various areas of the school. I remind students and parents that before 8:15am, there are no teachers on supervision duty. Therefore, students are to either sit with their parents, or if unaccompanied, sit in the tuckshop area. There is to be no play before 8:15am. Once the 8:15am play bell rings, students can play handball/skip/walk the track/visit the library.
Early Departure and Late Arrival at School
For the safety of all students, it is important that the following procedures are followed when students are collected early or arrive late for school;
- If your child needs to leave school during the day for any reason, they must be collected from the school office and signed out. Advanced notice to the school office will assist in having students ready at the collection time.
- Please do not go directly to your child’s class, as the class teacher is unable to amend the attendance roll.
- When returning to school following an appointment, students must report to the office so that the class roll can be marked accordingly.
- Students who arrive late to school in the morning (after 8:30am) must report to the school office before going to their classroom. This will prevent SMS messages being sent to parents when children are present at school.
Quote of the Week
"I really think a champion is not defined by their wins, but by how they can recover when they fall."
-Serena Williams

School Sores (or Impetigo)
Parents are advised there are a number of cases of school sores (impetigo) in the lower grades.
School sores (impetigo) is an infection of the skin and called “school sores” because school age children are usually the most likely to be infected and sores can be spread throughout a school.
- Impetigo is caused by bacteria that are able to live in the nose, throat, on the skin or in other parts of the body.
- These sores can be anywhere on the body but often appearing on the face near the mouth and nose or on the arms and legs.
- Impetigo is easily spread.
- It is more common in hotter months.
What does it look like?
- Impetigo usually starts with a blister or a group of blisters
- The blister bursts leaving a patch of red, wet skin which weeps.
- The spot becomes coated with a tan or yellowish crust.
- The spots can be itchy.
What to do?
- Please see a doctor to check the condition. Antibiotics are usually required to clear up the infection.
- Keep area clean with regular washing.
- Clothing, sheets and towels need careful washing.
Impetigo is contagious. Children need to remain at home until antibiotic treatment has commenced for 24 hours and sores must be covered with a watertight dressing.
Please advise our school office or the class teacher if your child has been infected. We are monitoring our school situation and encouraging our students to be vigilant with hand washing.
Thank you for assisting us in all health matters.

Readers Cup
Congratulations to our Readers Cup Team – Georgia, Katie, Lara and Lily. Earlier this year the team competed against 384 regional teams and made it to the State Finals in Brisbane. The girls had to read and study five new novels and compete against the best teams in Queensland. After a very competitive day, the girls finished up in ninth place and were awarded a medal for their outstanding efforts. We are very proud of the hard work these girls have put in to prepare for the State Finals.
After the competition the girls had an author and illustrator workshop with Peter Carnavas and Gabrielle Wang – authors of two of their novels. The girls also had time to explore the sights of Brisbane – Queensland Museum and Science Centre, Disney Animation, QPAC Theatre to see Cinderella and Urban Xtreme.
A big thank you to Mrs Savige for accompanying the girls on this trip – we appreciate all you have done to assist our girls to get to Brisbane and for making it such a fun trip.
Year 6 Camp
Thank you to the students, staff and parents who attended the Year 6 camp last week to the Capricorn Coast. Students threw a boomerang at the Dreamtime Cultural Centre, fed a kangaroo at Cooberrie Park Wildlife Centre, snorkeled and boom netted around Great Keppel Island and crawled through bat guano at the Capricorn Caves. It is always a great experience!
